“Languages and interpretation in the EU”

RESUMO
The lecture will dwell on the language regime in the EU institutions as regards interpretation. The lecturer who works as a freelance interpreter for the EP, EC, ECJ and other agencies will describe the methods and systems of interpretation, the specificity of each institution and trends of interpreter employement. He will also deal with some general and specific issues of conference interpretation (fast speeches, foreign names, culture/ideology specific items, terminology a.o.) which are relevant for the interpreters working at the institutions or planning to do it.
Nota biográfica
Andrejs Veisbergs (b. 1960), Dr. Habil. Philol. is a Professor of University of Latvia. His research publications since 1985 amount to more than 300, mainly on Idioms, Borrowing, Latvian, Language Contacts, Translation and Interpreting and Lexicography. He is the author of the biggest Latvian-English Dictionary (1997, Second edition 2005) as well as the author on several monographs on Latvian Idioms, Contrastive Linguistics, Conference Interpreting (2007, 2009), Idiom Borrowing (2012), Latvian and English Wordformation Compared (2013). Since 2004 he is also the Chairman of the Presidential Latvian Language Commission as well as occupies many other positions within Latvian language and academic community and on many editorial boards. “Translating for the EU”

RESUMO
The lecture will cover the translation process at the EU institutions, languages, types of texts for translation, work division and traditions. The lecturer will describe challenges for a translator and available resources for supporting translator’s work at the EU institutions. Requirements for translators planning their career at the EU institutions will be discussed.
Nota biográfica
Gunta Ločmele, Ph. D., is a professor at the University of Latvia. Her research interests include advertisement transfer and shifts of norms in translation. She has done freelance work as a translator and interpreter both for the bodies and agencies of the EU and for multinational companies.
