Promovido conjuntamente pelo ISCAP/P.PORTO (Mestrado em Tradução e Interpretação Especializadas), pela Escola do Porto da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Católica Portuguesa e pela DGT-Direção-Geral de Tradução da Comissão Europeia, o Congresso Língua e Direito terá lugar nas instalações do ISCAP e da UCP, em formato híbrido (presencial e online), com o intuito de identificar e debater um conjunto amplo de questões na interseção entre o mundo do Direito e o mundo da linguística.
Vivemos um tempo em que o Direito se internacionalizou e se europeizou, em que as diversas fronteiras (físicas, culturais, educacionais), entre povos e entre grupos sociais, se vão esbatendo (ou, mais recentemente, se vão reerguendo). Neste contexto, há que debater se as línguas assumem o papel de pontes ou, ao contrário, de muralhas. Quer se fale da tradução de documentos legais, da utilização de uma linguagem jurídica acessível ao cidadão comum, do uso de línguas diversas no ensino do Direito, dos direitos linguísticos dos estrangeiros e minorias nacionais ou de outros temas, a ligação entre o Direito e a língua, sempre complexa e multifacetada, é um domínio cuja investigação cabe promover.
O uso e interpretação de qualquer língua condicionam decisivamente o acesso de todos à justiça e os direitos das minorias linguísticas, refletindo-se na eficácia das políticas jurídicas. Por outro lado, o correto domínio da língua é essencial para a interpretação e aplicação da lei, com consequências significativas para os indivíduos e as comunidades.
O Congresso Língua e Direito pretende explorar esta estreita relação entre as duas áreas científicas, a partir de uma abordagem interdisciplinar que promova a troca de conhecimentos e as oportunidades de trabalho em rede entre profissionais e académicos, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento de uma compreensão mais profunda de como a língua molda e é simultaneamente moldada pelo sistema jurídico.

Convidamos, portanto, a comunidade académica a submeter propostas que possam enquadrar-se num dos seguintes eixos temáticos:
- O impacto do multilinguismo e da diversidade linguística no sistema jurídico: a tradução de documentos oficiais, administrativos, judiciais.
- Multilinguismo e direitos linguísticos: direitos de acesso à língua e o seu impacto em pessoas que não falam a língua nacional, a interpretação jurídica nas sociedades multilingues.
- O cidadão e a linguagem da administração pública: utilização de linguagem simplificada (plain language), o papel da língua e da comunicação na resolução alternativa de litígios.
- A tecnologia e a linguagem jurídica: a tradução automática, a inteligência artificial, etc.
- A tradução jurídica no Espaço Europeu: tradução, adaptação, transposição?
- O uso da língua no ensino do Direito.
- A linguagem jurídica nos media e nas artes: representação, crítica e simbologia da Lei e do Direito.

As propostas de comunicação devem:
- Ter uma extensão entre 300 e 350 palavras;
- Ser escritas numa das línguas de trabalho do Congresso (português, inglês, espanhol ou francês);
- Incluir um título (até 120 caracteres, incluindo espaços), nome e filiação do(s) autor(es) e um máximo de quatro palavras-chave;
- Referir objetivos, enquadramento, fundamentação, metodologia, entre outros aspetos considerados relevantes;
- Identificar as referências bibliográficas, se citadas. Recomenda-se o uso do estilo APA8;
- Ser submetidas através de formulário até 10 de junho de 2023.

Jointly promoted by ISCAP/P.PORTO (Master’s in Specialised Translation and Interpreting), the Faculty of Law of UCP-Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto and DGT-Direction-General for Translation of the European Commission, the Conference on Language and Law will take place at ISCAP and UCP, in a hybrid format (face-to-face and online), in order to identify and reflect on a number of issues related to the points of intersection of Law and Linguistics.
These are times when the law has become increasingly international and European. Borders (be they physical, cultural or educational) between peoples and social groups are gradually disappearing (or, more recently, being re-erected). Within this context, there is a debate to be had as to the role of languages as bridges or, on the contrary, as walls. Whether we are talking about the translation of legal documents, the use of accessible legal language to ordinary citizens, the use of different languages in the teaching of law, the linguistic rights of foreigners and national minorities, or still other issues, the connection between law and language, always complex and multi-layered, is an area whose research should be promoted.
The use and the interpretation of language decisively condition access to justice for all as well as the rights of linguistic minorities, with consequences in the effectiveness of legal policies. On the other hand, the correct command of language is essential for the interpretation and application of the law, which has an impact on individuals and communities.
The Conference Language and Law aims to explore this close relationship between both scientific areas, from an interdisciplinary approach that promotes knowledge exchange and networking opportunities among professionals and academics, thus contributing to the development of a deeper understanding of how language shapes and is simultaneously shaped by the legal systems.

We therefore invite the academic community to submit proposals that may fall within one of the following thematic areas:
- The impact of multilingualism and linguistic diversity on the legal system: the translation of official, administrative, judicial documents.
- Multilingualism and linguistic rights: language access rights and their impact on people who do not speak the national language, legal interpretation in multilingual societies.
- The citizen and the language of public administration: use of plain language, the role of language and communication in alternative dispute resolution.
- Technology and legal language: machine translation, artificial intelligence, etc.
- Legal translation in the European Area: translation, adaptation, transposition?
- The use of language in the teaching of law.
- Legal language in the media and the arts: representation, criticism and symbolic use of the Law.

Communication proposals should:
- Have between 300 and 350 words in length;
- Be written in one of the working languages of the Conference (Portuguese, English, Spanish or French);
- Include a title (up to 120 characters, including spaces), name and affiliation of the author(s) and a maximum of four keywords;
- Identify objectives, framework, rationale, methodology, among other aspects considered relevant;
- List bibliographical references, if cited. The use of APA8 style is recommended;
- Be submitted through the form until 10 June 2023.
