Intensive European Programme in translation and law

From January 26 to February 8, our school, ISCAP-IPP, welcomed 30 representatives from six other European universities in Porto, in the sixth edition of the intensive programme called “Legal Systems and Immigration Law in the EU: Translating and Interpreting Diversity”. Getting acquainted with European legal systems and immigration laws are the main objectives of this European programme that included, among other activities, a court visit, round tables, expert-oriented panel sessions with teachers, translators, interpreters and legal practitioners, a meeting with representatives of the immigrant communities in Portugal, a cultural tour of the city of Porto, meetings with the Mayors of Porto and Matosinhos, and intercultural exchanges. During the two-week programme, Czech, French, German, Latvian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish students were given the opportunity to get to know one another. They were accompanied by two teachers from each partner university, who also conducted the various activities.

Students always work in multinational and multicultural teams in the preparation of their tasks: translations, simulations, glossaries, etc. In this way, they discover more about how Romans, Germans, Spanish, Latvians, French and Czechs live and think. 

The Portuguese team includes law teachers – Deolinda Meira, André Martins e Tiago Fernandes – as well as translation teachers – Suzana Cunha, Isabelle Tulekian and Manuel Silva.

 The intensive programme had its first edition in 2009, at the Université de Bretagne-Sud and is hosted by a different partner country every year. After successive editions in Lorient, Magdeburg, Vigo, Bucharest and České Budějovice, in 2014, it is Porto’s turn to hold the closing edition of this IP on translation and law.
