If you’re away from home in this magical time of year, don’t despair. Why?! You’re in Porto and many Christmas adventures await you!
Porto combines the joy of tradition with a dash of Portuguese flair, making Christmas here feel as warm and welcoming as a gathering of old friends and family, with a cozy mix of tradition, lights, and warmth. Despite the winter chill - there’s a touch of magic everywhere you go. Let me show you!
Oh, the Christmas lights! How can you not fall in love?! The whole city gets dressed up for the season with twinkling lights hanging along Avenida dos Aliados (and everywhere really), where a giant Christmas tree stands tall.
Christmas markets are a big deal in Porto. If you haven’t gotten any gifts yet, don’t worry - these are the best places to visit:
-
World of Wine (WoW): 23rd November – 6th of January
-
Praça da Batalha: 29th of November – 29th of December
-
Jardim da Cordoaria: 30th of November – 23rd of December
-
Timeout Market: 29th of November – 5th of January
Have you ever ice skated before? If not, this is your chance to learn and show your hidden talent! There will be an ice rink at Largo do Amor de Perdição, from the 30th of November and 6th of January, and the best part is that it is free!
All these activities might leave you a little hungry, so I have the best suggestion. When walking through Porto’s streets, you can’t miss the smell of roasted chestnuts on every corner, a seasonal favorite that warms both hands and hearts.
These are just a few things that will make your Erasmus stay unforgettable. Don ́t miss it!
Have a merry little Christmas and Happy New Year!
