If you’re an international student in Porto, get ready for one of the most fun and unforgettable nights of the year: the São João celebration in Porto!
This tradition is one of the most vibrant and beloved events in Portugal, taking place every year on the night of June 23. The city of Porto transforms into a massive street party filled with music, food, drinks, and plastic hammers. These are one of the most iconic symbols of the night, where tradition says that playfully tapping friends and strangers on the head with colorful plastic hammers represents good luck and friendship.
Fireworks light up the sky over the Douro River at midnight (aka Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia), creating a spectacular view for everyone gathered along the Luiz I Bridge.
Food is also at the heart of São João. People enjoy grilled sardines, caldo verde (a traditional Portuguese soup), and plenty of local wine and beer. There are also concerts, dancing, and sky lanterns released into the night sky, creating na amazing festive atmosphere.
So grab your friends, bring your best energy, and don’t worry too much about your hairstyle (trust us, those plastic hammers are everywhere!). São João isn’t just a party, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll remember long after your time in Porto.
